SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

I have recently been exploring sustainable design and reflecting on my own practice. I am currently experimenting with different techniques to create adjustable and reusable designs, that can be altered to fit changing body shapes or re-modelled into something new.

My print was inspired by the green spaces in and around Edinburgh, the disrupted natural form reflects my own concern over the future of these places. To ensure sustainability all fabrics used were either dead stock material or repurposed garments/toiles and the screen printing inks were water based. I also used creative pattern cutting, pleating techniques and fastenings, to create adjustable designs that almost entirely avoided waste.

Each design was created in response to the found fabrics, turning my usual design process on its head and beginning where I would normally end. I feel putting materials at the forefront made me more mindful of how they were used and ensured I didn't get too attached to a specific idea too soon, which avoided unnecessary waste arising from requiring specialised materials which could only be sourced completely new. I hope to further develop these experiments and use them in my design practice in the future.
