The Ophelia Project was inspired by the tragic story of Ophelia and her untimely death. It took inspiration from the Pre-Raphaelite depictions of Ophelia, but sought to modernise her appearance. In previous depictions of Ophelia she appears passive and gentle, whilst my costume clearly shows the violent impact of other character's decisions on Ophelia. The textiles are inspired by the water that engulfs her and the costume is designed to appear dripping wet, weighing her down. It is made from 50% sustainable materials (dead-stock fabric and up-cycled garments and toiles from previous projects). This is part of a on-going effort I will be making to move towards more sustainable creative processes.
